The Lady in the Woods, a romantic Gothic suspense novel by Maria Bluni that is heart-pounding and reminds us that time is fleeting and precious. Bizarre twists of fate alter the course of the Boston characters and leaves us with the understanding that love never dies…and neither does the soul. Spoiler alert: a ghost is very much involved.”

“A novel that really snuck up on me”

Geek Girl Authority, July 19, 2022 | Julia Roth

The Lady in the Woods was a novel that really snuck up on me. I knew I would be intrigued and most likely enjoy my time with it. What I didn’t expect was to fully fall in love with it. If the little blurb about the story was interesting and inviting, the full story is intoxicating and impossible to put down. This tale is best gone in blind, so I won’t be spoiling any of the twists and turns here. But I will say that while yes, this is a romance, the story expands so much further past that. The suspense is top-notch.

“Where I come from: Romantic suspense book doesn't disappoint”

The Daily Times, July 16, 2022 | Linda Braden Albert

Becoming immersed in a book and the lives of its characters is one of the finest blessings in life. When that book gives you a shiver up your spine and gets your mind thinking that perhaps there’s more to this life than what we can see and touch and explain in earthbound terms, so much the better.

I found such a book recently in “The Lady in the Woods” by Maria Bluni after receiving an email from her publicist asking if I’d be interested in a review copy. Most of the time I will focus on local authors who have the fortitude to write and publish a book, but occasionally publications from outside our area will pique my interest, and I will accept the offer of a copy to consider for a mention. “The Lady in the Woods” (Austin Macauley Publishers; 232 pages) definitely did not disappoint.

The book is Bluni’s debut novel, a romantic suspense with paranormal overtones, and is reminiscent of those of Nora Roberts. The main characters are Mariah Talbot and Andrew Madden, described in the book blurb as follows:

“Mariah Talbot seems to lead a charmed life. Successful and talented, she is an interior designer in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood and, by all accounts, is fulfilling her dreams. But appearances can be deceiving. Few people know the truth about her tragic past and why she guards her heart so fiercely, or the fact she is still very much in love with a ghost.

“Andrew Madden is a partner in one of Boston’s elite law firms. Bracing himself for a confrontation on his commute to work one morning, the last thing he expects is to be captivated by the woman who emerges from her car. Mariah is unlike any woman he has ever met, and their attraction is instant. But as he soon discovers, there is much more to her than meets the eye. He clings to the hope that with time, she will come to trust him completely.

“But time is precious and fleeting. Neither of them could have predicted the bizarre twist of fate that alters the course of their lives forever. Only when Andrew embarks on his own journey, unraveling the haunting secrets of Mariah’s past, does he finally come to understand that love never dies ... and neither does the soul.”

Bluni weaves a marvelous tale, subtly lighting upon topics such as grief and loss, reconciliation, forgiveness, going forward as healing takes place, and what may lie beyond the boundaries of our five senses. I was immediately pulled into the story and couldn’t put the book down until I had devoured every page. Some of those “bizarre twists” caught me by surprise — not an easy thing to do — and I confess, I gasped when I read them.

I found the book well-written, easy to read, filled with enough suspense to keep my imagination and interest sizzling yet not so frightening or upsetting that I was hesitant to read it before going to bed.

Waking up early one morning, I decided to start reading Maria Bluni’s new book ‘The Lady in the Woods.’ I could not put it down so I actually finished it. She has hit it out of the park with her first debut novel.

Mariah Talbot is a young widow still grieving for her late husband Mark. She unexpectedly meets Andrew on her way to work one morning and is immediately attracted to him. They start to see each other exclusively from that moment on.

This is a story of the deep power of love and how it affects and changes all who experience it. Bluni creates wonderful characters that make you care about them. Mark encouraged Mariah to start Back Bay Décor with him in Boston. They hired Carlos and Sue, two very talented employees who are complete opposites except for their love for Mariah. Both help her through the years following Mark’s death. Mariah’s parents reach out to her as well but she has never forgiven her father for not being supportive of Mark.

With Andrew, Mariah begins a new chapter in her life. She admits to him that she is not fulfilled with being the owner of an interior decorating business. He encourages her to pursue her love of painting instead.

As their relationship deepens, she decides to tell Andrew about Mark. She also decides to finally forgive her father for his treatment of Mark. Circumstances arise that prevent these things from happening.

I really enjoyed the character of Gideon. He is part guide and counselor keeping those who need him on the right track.

I don’t want to give any more of this riveting tale away but it will make you think of how precious life is. If you love someone let them know it, don’t wait until it’s too late. This well-crafted story has twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. That’s always a treat for a lover of suspense.

“This is a book that deserves a spot in every library. I highly recommend it to everyone. I will rate it with 5 stars.

It's such a truly wonderful story. The plot is captivating and very engaging. Even though the story was about Mariah and Andrew it wasn't only focused on their romantic relationship. This book describes the journey of love, loss, and the process of healing, in a very heartwarming way. The unique part of it is that we see how one horrible incident can affect so many people and also we see their reactions. The multiple situations made this story stand out more. I don't want to comment more on this because I would hate to spoil anything. But I would like to add that it has a few twists that were mindblowing.”
